The President introduced Mr. Eaton, the School Superintendent. Mr. Eaton discussed the
upcoming Bond Measure J that will be on the November Ballot. Mr. Eaton indicated that he can
only discuss the information and not his personal view. Measure J is a facilities Bond for structural
improvement. A Prop 39 Bond allows schools to get 55% of the votes to pass a nearly 35 million
dollar bond. The money would go to make improvements on Jefferson School Districts four
schools.
Jefferson School was last modernized in 1966. It is the oldest school and it has asbestos and lead
paint but it is isolated. There is a historical building on site that will be preserved.
Mr. Eaton discussed that alternate energy sources are out there that would decrease energy cost.
Traina School’s utility bills currently run $10,000 to $12,000 per month.
Traina needs shade structures as well. The money could cover technology upgrades at all 4
schools, installing artificial turf and track fields at all schools. Traina was built with hard-ship funds
which are state funds that are provided for basic needs. The gym was set aside to be built with
bond money and would cost 4-5 million dollars. The Jefferson school district is trying to work with
the City on this project which would allow the City to use the facility as well. It is estimated that the
cost to the tax payer would be about $23.01 per $100,000 of assessed home values. If the bond
passes there will be a committee that oversees the bond money. If the bond does not pass,
another bond will not be on the ballot for 2 years. Additional information is available on the
Jefferson School District website.
